How I helped an executive develop a timeless new resumé and LinkedIn profile in just 24 hours
After several years at home raising a family, a former executive was returning to the workforce and needed a resumé that highlighted her skills and experience, while minimizing a purposeful several-year employment gap. Urgent, 24-hour turnaround was required, as she had an opportunity waiting for her, with very little time to respond.
We worked together to feature her past project successes — both in industry and volunteer work — that highlighted her exceptional organizational and management skills.
Typical resumés focus on a reverse chronological listing of past positions, often containing a laundry list of accomplishments, without highlighting results or benefits of those achievements.
How could we highlight the skills that made her both an exceptional manager, and an exceptional volunteer leader — while minimizing the visibility of her intentional gap in full-time employment?
As we were under the gun to deliver immediately, we skipped the typical written communication path used to gather and assemble information, and worked extensively by phone. We started with discussions around:
- her former roles held, and the successful projects and departments she led
- the specific and unique results she accomplished through a variety of positions, both paid and unpaid
- the traits, skills, and approach that made her a standout in those positions
We focused on her unique intensity and dedication to previous positions. We were then able to present her advantages in a professional profile summarizing her motivational, energetic, and passionate leadership style. This was coupled with a series of bullet points highlighting three qualifications: proven leadership in both operational management and team-building, skills in developing and overseeing complex assignments, and her goal-oriented, ambitious, and hard-working style.
These qualifications were then supported by specific examples demonstrating direct benefits to employers. While former positions and dates were listed at the end, the focus was on results and accomplishments, not tied to specific timeframes.
